During the last century, the increasing globalization of the Thoroughbred industry led to a rise within the world of horseracing, where economic and social interests that weren´t previously relevant, began to emerge. Thus, the need arose amongst the South American racing Nations, to create a stronger bond with organizations related to the racing activity at an International level, and in 1958 the Organización Sudamericana de Fomento del Pura Sangre de Carrera (South American Organization for the Promotion of Thoroughbred) was created.

The main objectives of our Organization are:

  • To promote an extensive exchange of information between its Members and with International Organizations worldwide;

  • To promote the harmonization of racing protocols and regulations within the region;

  • To promote the control and fight against doping in Thoroughbreds and jockeys;

  • To improve the quality of pattern races within South America

  • To achieve the improvement of Stud Books as regards Thoroughbred identification and issuing of documents;

  • To promote breeding and its related activities, aiming at the best practices;

  • To communicate about the evolution achieved by the horseracing activity within the continent, highlighting its quality and importance;

  • To aid in the solution of problems that affect the evolution and development of the horseracing activity;

  • To organize and participate in Congresses, Conferences or International Committees’ meetings related to the Thoroughbred industry;

  • To build and maintain a good relationship and actively take part in the major international organizations;

  • To develop reports, statistics and technical papers on the Thoroughbred industry, of public interest

Each year, OSAF organices and stages the Longines Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1) (former Gran Premio Asociación Latinoamericana de Jockey Clubes e Hipódromos). This is an itinerant race, changing venues and countries every year, featuring the most remarkable Thoroughbreds of our region, from at least 5 Latin American countries, and it is also the race with the largest pursemoney in South America.

OSAF is member of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), the International Stud Book Committee (ISBC).

Since 2014, OSAF has the support of Longines as official partner, official watch and official chronometer.
